Bill Monroe, 1989

This may be the most well-known of all my portraits and I consider it to be a rather remarkable image in that I had very little to do with creating it. Like many great portraits, more often than not what the subject brings to the experience is vastly more telling than what the photographer brings. It was shot after an album cover photo session and as was my custom I asked Mr. Monroe if I could shoot a B&W roll for myself. He agreed. I shot two rolls of him laughing and playing around and as I announced that I think I had it he said, "Could you please make one pitcher for me?" and he went into this pose. He obviously had this shot well visualized in his mind...I was just along for the ride.
